Acupuncture

Chinese medicine is based on the theory that energy flows through the body and channels. When there is a disruption or imbalance in the flow of this energy, illness or discomfort occur. Acupuncture works by accessing the energy via fine single-use needles placed at points along the channels. Blockages are removed and imbalances corrected with the needles and other modalities. Herbs are used either with acupuncture to enhance the effect or on its own to achieve balance in the body. Many people find acupuncture treatments relaxing and achieve a sense of well-being after several treatments. Acupuncture can be very effective in the treatment of asthma, chronic fatigue, digestive and gynecological problems, headaches, insomnia, complications of pregnancy including morning sickness, and the control of chronic and acute pain, among many other conditions. Acupuncture health-care benefits may be available through major private insurance companies, workers compensation, and automobile or personal injury insurance policies..

Physical Therapy and Water Therapy
Our physical therapists utilize traditional and modern technologies acting as facilitators to assist you in regaining function with ongoing education to achieve your goals. We provide quality health care planning, treatment/prevention techniques and independent or supervised health maintenance programs which promote active, injury free lives. A holistic, comprehensive approach is consistent with treatment. Physical Therapy techniques include manual therapy, myofascial release, neuromuscular reeducation, electric stimulation, ultrasound, Nautilus, free weight training, aerobic conditioning, specific conditioning for job or sport related injuries and Water Therapy.

Water Therapy at Longfellow Health Center entails therapeutic exercises in a virtually gravity-eliminated environment. The buoyancy effect of water provides a safe, pain-free environment, while water resistance provides a challenge for strength training and aerobic conditioning. The buoyancy of water supports injured structures and eliminates compressive forces that can cause pain and restrictive mobility. The hydrostatic force of water provides both a stimulus and a resistance for all structures in order to increase strength, stability, and tissue resiliency. Exercising in water allows the client to more actively participate in his/her recovery. These water activities are holistic in nature and immediately applicable to function on land.

Water Therapy is ideal for patients who are de-conditioned, overweight, or in pain. It is also great for those with orthopedic, neurologic, or arthritic conditions. Our program has been used successfully by high level professional athletes and those simply wishing to increase their level of fitness. Water Therapy in conjunction with traditional physical therapy, modalities and exercises provide the most benefit to clients in need of rehabilitation.

Therapy services at Longfellow are provided by a licensed physical therapist in a one-on-one setting. A comprehensive evaluation is conducted, then treatment goals and a plan are then set. The patient is seen individually for 45 minutes, usually one to three times per week, to receive treatment and instruction in their program. Each program is "tailor-made" based on the patients evaluative findings. The patient progresses as fast as possible through a course of 10 to 12 sessions. A re-evaluation then determines the course of either continuance of treatment, furlough or discharge.

Physical Therapy and Water Therapy health-care benefits may be available through most major private insurance companies, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Medicare, Workers Compensation, and Automobile or Personal Injury insurance policies .
